Winter and comfort food

Today Calgary seen its first snow fall of the season, and waking up to all that white stuff stirred up an almost instant desire to eat comfort food. You know the stuff I am talking about - hot chocolate, warm mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, a cheesy meaty casserole, warm apple pie, a bag of chips or a chocolate bar. It doesn’t help that my daughter got 2 gorcery bags full of candy this Halloween, or the fact that although he tried to ‘hide it’ Jose’ didn’t put the delectible treats in a very hard place to find. So, all day as I noticed the snowy scenery around me I had to fight off those cravings for comfort. I thought about what I would give to just cuddle up in a blanket with my family, watch one of my favorite movies, and munch down on some of my favorite comfort foods. Then I realized - I wouldn’t give up much. I certainly don’t want to give up my diet or my exercise plan, I don’t want to forfeit all my hard work for those few minutes of indulgences… I could still sit down in some warm blankets and watch a movie with my family, but who needs all that food? So it tastes good - so what?!

I wonder what it is about the snow that makes me want to gather food and hibernate on a fatty supply of tasty goodness (or should I say badness?). I guess this winter I am going to have to find other alternatives to my once treasured indulgence. Maybe instead I could pack up a thermos of low cal hot chocolate, and bundle up with Myah and Jose and head to our nearest park and run around in the snow, build a snow man, go skating, go tobogganing, maybe go for a long walk in the snow on one of the many long paths at fish creek park. How rewarding would that be? Heating up from the exercise, but feeling the coolness on my face, and then after exhausting all out energy going home to a nice dinner and cuddling up to watch a movie. Totally exhausted, and fulfilled - without food.

Yes, this season is going to be different. And I just can’t wait.

Oh yes winter does have a way of making us crave comfort foods doesn’t it?

I love the way you are thinking of new ways to find comfort and to have fun and still enjoy yourself without fattening foods.

Winter can be a challenge but going into it with the right frame of mind sure will help.

    Good for you
